The Feud on Channel 5: All the unforgivable clangers viewers have called out in the Jill Halfpenny thriller

By Helen Fear | Tue Apr 15 2025

The Feud continues on Channel 5 this week with Jill Halfpenny portraying morally ambiguous extension-obsessed Emma - and while the six-parter is certainly entertaining, there have been some quite eye-popping 'plot-holes' too.

It's not the first time a Channel 5 thriller has been accused of some frankly preposterous writing either - remember The Wives, The Au Pair, and The Castaways? Say no more.

This new drama introduces the Barnett family, who live on Shelbury Drive in Newcastle - where there may or may not be a dead body under a tree, an extension is being made in half the time it takes to rustle up a stir-fry, and an estate agent doesn't bother cleaning up a murder scene before showing a potential buyer around...

And that's just for starters! Here are all the unforgivable clangers and plot-holes I - and the viewers - have called out in the Jill Halfpenny thriller The Feud on Channel 5...

The Feud on Channel 5 plot-holes: An extension takes one month?

The most obvious flaw in Channel 5's The Feud is the fact that Emma seems to live in a time warp - where everything gets done SUPER fast. The entire six-part series, from the street party at the beginning to the house being sold at the end, takes place over one month!

No sooner does supreme being Emma decide that she wants a kitchen extension, then things start happening like a Disney-film where cute animals make magic happen... Within a day, Emma has a builder lined up. As someone who recently had an extension, I can tell you it takes MONTHS to find a decent builder, and many more to get planning. Builders have long waiting lists and, if they don't, well you wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot spade.

Within hours, Emma has had a survey on the house done, and secured planning permission via her dodgy dad (played by Larry Lamb). He must be GOD himself to have done this. Less than a week after the street party where Emma first announced her desire for building work, builder Lee has started work with a brew firmly in hand.

One viewer called out: "I'm sorry, but you can't get planning permission and be so far along with the build in one month. #thefeud."

Another said: "Enjoying #TheFeud, but that builder!! As if you'd make a decision to hire him of all people and in about 25 seconds!"

Jill Halfpenny's character Emma Barnett is 'so unlikeable'

Emma claims to be "working all hours" but actually seems to do nothing except obsess about the extension. One scene in episode 1 to set up an enemy - step forward Jamie-Lee O'Donnell's character PC Andi Gallagher - and Emma hasn't been near work since.

Instead, she's been chasing after her dad, attending dinner parties, and going to the pub, as well as chasing down her oddball neighbour Nick to see film footage of her husband's apparent affair. On that topic, did anybody else feel a red flag shoot up at how damn calm she was with husband John after seeing blatant evidence he's having an affair?

But, really, the most infuriating thing about Emma? Her bulldozer approach to the extension (pun intended). She did a 360 degree turn on moving house, which she'd agreed to with her husband, and decided to push ahead with the extension without caring what anyone else wanted - let alone her elderly neighbours.

'She's obsessed with that bloody kitchen'

Viewers took against the character with one writing on X: "Jill Halfpenny's character is so unlikeable that I'm on the side of the Irish policewoman #thefeud."

Another said: "Emma is horrible - I hate her!"

A third added: "I don't like this woman at all. She's not used to anyone saying 'no' to her. #thefeud."

"Jill playing another unlikable character," agreed another. "She's obsessed with that bloody kitchen."

Lastly, one spoke for many when they said: "I wish Emma would get murdered. Sadly, we already know she survives! And they already have a perfectly lovely kitchen!"

The Feud plot-holes: Sack the estate agent!

At the beginning of each episode, viewers are taken to the house on Shelbury Drive - after the murder.

In episode one, an estate agent showed a potential buyer around the property hoping for a quick sale. But, hang on, the blood hadn't even been washed off the walls!

A bit of detergent would have scrubbed that up nicely...

Jamie-Lee O'Donnell as 'racist cop' PC Gallagher

Meanwhile, viewers called out a TV cliché during the court scenes in the first episode. One said: "What a shock. Making a white police officer out as racist. #TheFeud."

Another said: "Or an ethnic minority playing the system... By pretending not to speak English."

A third chimed in: "Here we go again. Police are racist, and the poor Bangladeshi criminal can't speak English."

Later, PC Andi Gallagher blamed defence barrister Emma for ruining her career after discrediting her in the witness stand. Andi then tracked down Emma's daughter Beth, in the hope of revenge.

As the episodes progress, Beth begins to fall for Andi. But hang on, Andi is played by a 38-year-old actress. While Megan Trower's Beth is just a teenager. Of course, age-gap relationships can happen in real life, but this seems a bit icky, no?

One thing we can't fault is the cast, which includes Tessa Peake-Jones and James Fleet [Credit: Channel 5]

The Feud on Channel 5's background musical soundtrack

Viewers have joined forces on X to criticise the background music on Channel 5's The Feud.

One fumed: "That stupid continual background music is driving me mad ! So unnecessary #TheFeud."

Another agreed, typing: "Is the annoying background music absolutely necessary?"

A third wrote: "Not sure if I can stand much more of the over-jaunty background music!"

"Struggling with the sound a bit," admitted another.

What are the accents?

While The Feud was filmed in Newcastle, the accents have left some viewers feeling a bit discombobulated.

One asked: "Is it too much to hope that families like Emma and her dad speak with the same accent? #TheFeud."

Another said: "There's A LOT of different accents in this."
