The Marlow Murder Club Series 2: Holby City reunion as Hugh Quarshie guests stars in episodes 5 & 6

By Dave Golder | Wed Apr 02 2025

There’s a mini Holby City reunion in The Marlow Murder Club’s third and final story of series 2 (episodes 5 & 6).

Because when Judith joins an archaeological dig, she bonds over old bones with a certain Professor Gifford, played by Hugh Quarshie.

Hugh, of course, spent years portraying consultant Rick Griffin in Holby City alongside Jo Martin, who played neurosurgeon Max McGerry. And Jo is now The Marlow Murder Club’s practically minded dog walker Suzie.

When a drone being used to survey the dig is blown off-course, it captures some footage that brings Judith and her team back in contact with Marlow’s finest, who are investigating what appears to be a tragic accident at the boat yard on the opposite bank of the Thames. Looking at the drone footage, Judith thinks there may be something more suspicious to the death than that.

Here's everything you need to know about the main guest cast for The Marlow Murder Club series 2 episodes 5 and 6, which also features Elizabeth Bennett, Camilla Beeput and James Gaddas.

The Marlow Murder Club Series 2, episodes 5 & 6 guest cast: Hugh Quarshie is Professor Darius Gifford

Professor of Early Medieval Archaeology Darius Gifford turns up at the Thameside archaeological dig where Judith is working and immediately compliments her, saying that he knows her by reputation and that her work is required reading in his university’s Ancient History department.

Judith seems quite charmed with him, leading Suzie and Becks to joke about whether her admiration is purely academic, or something more.

Hugh appeared as surgeon Rick Griffin in over 500 episodes of Holby City from 2001 to 2020 (with a return one-off appearance in 2022 for the show’s final episode). One of his most memorable and praised storylines showed him coping with a brain tumour.

Since Holby he has had recurring roles in the Martin Freeman-starring Sky comedy Breeders and the ITV thriller Maryland, starring Suranne Jones. Sci-fi fans will recognise him from Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace, where he played the Captain Panaka, the security forces guy who helped Queen Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) escape from Naboo to Tatooine.

Elizabeth Bennett guest stars as Ursula Liddington

Elizabeth Bennett, who plays the honorary secretary of the boat club in the episode, has one of those faces that you know you from somewhere but can’t remember where. And the answer is: probably everywhere.

The actress has appeared in countless numbers of prestige TV dramas over the past five decades, from legendary women’s prison series Within These Walls in 1975 to Father Brown in 2023, with everything from Casualty and Doctors, to Vera and Silk in between.

But her most famous roles include 17 episodes of Heartbeat as the opinionated local councillor Joyce Jowett (1996-2009), a stint as local hotel owner Doreen Archer in the Lakes (1997-1999) and nosy cleaner Enid Thompson in the John Thaw sitcom Home To Roost (1985-1986).

A friend of Suzie, Jackie Tynham is the daughter of the owner of the local boat yard, who seems to be holding the place together while getting dad is off engaging in extra-curricular activities.

Camilla Beeput, who plays Jackie, recently had a very memorable role in the sci-fi series Dune: Prophecy as the vengeful Reverend Mother Dorotea (the one who was killed off but came back by taking over another Sister’s body… as you do in sci-fi).

She was also seen as Julie Woodson, girlfriend of main character Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins in ITV’s thriller The Tower (2021 to 2024), coming to the fore in the third and final season.

Harry Tynham is owner of the local boat yard, which is struggling at the moment and he’s not coping well. Suzie is convinced her old friend is a straight-up guy, but to what lengths will he go to try to save his business?

James spent a year on the cobbles of Coronation Street between 1999 to 2000 as Rovers Return barman Vinny Sorrell, who two-timed Natalie Barnes with her sister Debs Brownlow.

After that he nabbed a prime role in series four to seven of ITV's Bad Girls as women’s prison governor Neil Grayling, who was killed off during an outbreak of legionnaire's disease in the institution.

More recently he was seen as abusive, racist care worker Cormac Ranger in Hollyoaks from 2021 to 2022. Again, he ended up dead, this time dying of a heart attack during a brain scan, after he was attacked by Warren (Jamie Lomas), who used to see Cormac as a father figure until he learned the awful truth.

The Marlow Murder Club series 2 episodes 5 & 6 air on U & U&Drama from 8pm, Wednesday, April 2.
